Behind the Bend looks at the path our society is taking and whether we are truly convinced that we are moving in the right direction. The causes we have made in the past have led us to this moment and what we do now will shape our future. The circumstances of our society and our lives are not random and isolated events, over which we have no control. We are riding a current of past and present human interactions. If we want to change the course of our common destiny, then we need to understand the critical steps that we must take as a society to change the direction of our country in a positive and meaningful way. Behind the Bend is a movement of change based on our individual transformations that together will change the direction of society.
My Background
Sanjay Gaur started practicing Nichiren Diashonin Buddhism with the Soka Gakkai (a lay Buddhist organization) when he was 17. Through his practice, he came to realize that our human activities are impacting and reshaping the environment. He went on to study at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he graduated with a BA in Environmental Studies and Economics and a Masters in Applied Economics. He then joined the United States Peace Corps in Bulgaria from 1995 to 1997 as an Environmental Volunteer. In Bulgaria, he worked with the local government, organized the first Earth Day Celebration, taught environmental studies at a local high school, and worked to raise awareness of environmental pollution and water quality issues, especially among the younger population. Following the Peace Corps, Sanjay studied at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University where he graduated with a Master’s in Public Administration/International Development. For the last 25 years Sanjay has been a consultant to water and wastewater agencies, assisting them in financial related matters. He is the founder and president of Water Resources Economics.
